Timmy

Timmy started out life as a comic book character created by Forrest Card, who approached me with the idea of turning his little cthulhu alien wizard into a figurine. The comic character takes many forms, both evil and good, but Forrest and I settled on doing a tiny 'cute' version for the 3D print. Forrest drew up the concept art, and I sculpted it out in zbrush. I also retopologized the character to keep the surface clean, because we wanted the character to have the vibe of classic 1980's toys. Or those tiny green aliens you used to get in plastic 25 cent bubbles at a pizza arcade.

It took a few tries to get the desired 3D print. The very first one had wings that snapped off because while the thin, delicate dragon wings looked great in concept and sculpt, it broke like toothpicks in plastic. We probably could have predicted that, but we were hoping in vain. For the second try, I resculpted the wings and a few of the cloth folds to the correct minimum thickness given to me by the 3D printer.

The final print turned out perfectly! Thick enough wings that you can touch them, but still maintain as close to the original silhouette and look as possible. For the beauty renders, I took the low res version of the character and textured him in substance, and then took it into Octane. I also sculpted a mid res background and threw some textures on it and added it in to give Timmy a place to live.

The overall look of the renders were inspired by my favorite game from childhood: Putt Putt Goes To The Moon. Forrest's one suggestion he gave for the colors were "purple and green", so I took that and had fun with it - adding in stars to the robe and sparkles to the orb. Just your classic little green cthulhu alien wizard.
